Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
